A week in the Himachal hills for the whole family: the colonial Ridge of Shimla, snow play at Kufri and Solang, and three nights in Manali.
The two best-loved hill towns of Himachal in one trip. Shimla has the Ridge, the Mall and the toy-train station; Manali has the Beas river, cedar forest and the snow slopes of Solang Valley.
The trip starts and ends in Chandigarh, which has good flight and train connections. You get a private car for the whole week and breakfast and dinner at every hotel in the hills.
Pick-up from Chandigarh airport or railway station and a drive of about four hours (115 km) into the hills. Evening walk on the Mall Road and the Ridge, past Christ Church and Scandal Point.
Morning excursion to Kufri (16 km), with pony rides to the viewpoint and snow from December to February. Back in Shimla, visit Jakhu Temple on the highest hill in town and the Viceregal Lodge.
A full day on the road (250 km, about eight hours) along the Beas river, past Pandoh Dam and through the Kullu Valley. Stop for shawls at a Kullu weaving unit if you wish.
Visit Hadimba Temple, built of wood in 1553, the Manu Temple in Old Manali and the hot springs at Vashisht. Afternoon at the Club House and the Tibetan monastery; evening on Mall Road.
Drive to Solang Valley (13 km) for the ropeway, paragliding or, in winter, skiing and snow scooters. Continue through the 9 km Atal Tunnel to Sissu in the Lahaul Valley and return to Manali.
Drive back to the plains (310 km, about eight hours). If time allows, see Sukhna Lake in the evening.
Breakfast and transfer to Chandigarh airport or railway station. With a late flight there is time for the Rock Garden.
