Six days across the Kashmir Valley: a night on a Dal Lake houseboat, the Gulmarg meadows and two unhurried days by the Lidder river in Pahalgam.
Kashmir is at its best when it is not rushed. This trip gives you a night on a houseboat on Dal Lake, a day in the high meadows of Gulmarg and two full days in Pahalgam, where the Lidder river runs through pine forest.
A private car and driver stay with you from the airport pick-up to the drop, so you travel at your own pace. Breakfast and dinner are included every day, which matters in the hills where restaurants close early.
Your driver meets you at Srinagar airport and takes you to the houseboat on Dal Lake. In the afternoon visit Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, the terraced gardens the Mughal emperors laid out on the lake shore. Back on the houseboat, a shikara ride at sunset.
Drive about two hours (50 km) to Gulmarg, the "meadow of flowers" at 2,650 m. The Gondola goes up in two stages to Kongdoori and Apharwat; tickets are best booked online in advance. In winter the slopes are under snow and sledging and skiing are on offer.
A drive of about four hours (140 km) through the valley. Stop at the saffron fields of Pampore and the 9th-century temple ruins at Awantipora before following the Lidder river up to Pahalgam.
A free day in Pahalgam. Most guests hire a local union cab to see Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari; others walk the riverside or ride a pony up to Baisaran meadow.
Return to Srinagar (about three hours, 90 km). The afternoon is for the old city: Hazratbal on the lake, and Lal Chowk and Polo View market for pashmina, dry fruit and walnut-wood work.
Breakfast at the hotel and transfer to Srinagar airport for your flight home.
