A week through Kerala from the tea hills of Munnar to the spice country of Thekkady, ending with a night on an Alleppey houseboat and a day in Fort Kochi.
This is the classic Kerala route, done at a comfortable pace: two nights among the tea estates of Munnar, a night beside Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady, a lakeside stay in Kumarakom and a night on a private houseboat in the Alleppey backwaters.
You travel in a private air-conditioned car with the same driver throughout. All meals are served on the houseboat; breakfast is included elsewhere.
Pick-up from Kochi airport or railway station and a drive of about four hours (130 km) into the Western Ghats. Stop at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls on the way. Evening at leisure in Munnar.
Visit Eravikulam National Park for the Nilgiri tahr and views to Anamudi, the highest peak in South India. Later see Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and the Tea Museum, where the estate story is told from leaf to cup.
Drive about three and a half hours (90 km) through cardamom hills to Thekkady. In the afternoon take the boat on Periyar Lake, where elephants, bison and deer come down to the water, then walk a spice plantation with a guide.
Descend to the backwaters (about four hours, 130 km). Kumarakom sits on Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in Kerala. The afternoon is free for the resort pool, a village walk or the bird sanctuary.
A short drive to Alleppey to board your private houseboat at noon. Cruise the canals and paddy fields with lunch, tea and dinner cooked on board. The boat anchors for the night at sunset.
After breakfast on board, drive to Kochi (about one and a half hours, 55 km). See the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, the Dutch Palace and the Jewish quarter at Mattancherry. Evening free for Marine Drive.
Breakfast and transfer to Kochi airport or railway station.
