A week in the North East with a small group: the waterfalls and living root bridges of Meghalaya, the clear Umngot river at Dawki and a rhino safari in Kaziranga.
Meghalaya means "abode of clouds", and the plateau south of Shillong is one of the wettest places on earth. The result is deep gorges, waterfalls that drop off the edge of the hills and bridges that the Khasi people grow from the roots of rubber trees.
The trip ends in Kaziranga National Park in Assam, home to two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceroses. Groups are limited to 12, with a tour leader from Guwahati.
Meet the group at Guwahati airport by 1 pm and drive to Shillong (100 km, about three hours), stopping at Umiam Lake. Evening at Police Bazaar.
Visit Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak, then drive to Cherrapunji, locally called Sohra (55 km). See the Mawkdok valley viewpoint, Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls and the limestone Mawsmai Cave.
Drive to Tyrna village and walk down about 3,500 steps to Nongriat, where two living bridges cross the stream one above the other. The return climb takes two to three hours. Those who prefer an easy day visit Arwah Cave and the Wei Sawdong falls viewpoint instead.
Drive to Dawki on the Bangladesh border for a boat ride on the Umngot, so clear from November to April that boats seem to float in air. Continue to Mawlynnong village and the single root bridge at Riwai, then back to Shillong.
Drive down to the Assam plains and along the Brahmaputra valley to Kaziranga (250 km, about six hours). Evening visit to the orchid park and a cultural show.
Morning jeep safari in the central or western range: rhinos, wild buffalo, swamp deer and elephants graze in the tall grass, and tigers are sometimes seen. The afternoon is free for a second safari or a tea garden walk.
Drive back to Guwahati (200 km, about four and a half hours) and drop at the airport by 2 pm. Book a flight after 4 pm.

The vehicle is used as per the itinerary and is not at disposal. Air-conditioning is switched off on hill roads.
