A small-group week in Ladakh: two days to acclimatise in Leh, then over Khardung La to the Nubra dunes and on to the blue water of Pangong.
Ladakh rewards those who give it time. The first two days stay close to Leh at 3,500 m so your body adjusts, before the road climbs over Khardung La into Nubra Valley and follows the Shyok river to Pangong Lake.
Groups are kept to 12 travellers in tempo travellers with an experienced local driver. Inner Line Permits, the environment fee and an oxygen cylinder in every vehicle are included.
Fly into Leh and transfer to the hotel. The whole day is for rest: Leh is at 3,500 m and the body needs time to adjust. Drink plenty of water and avoid exertion. A short walk to Leh market in the evening if you feel well.
An easy day west of Leh along the Indus: the Hall of Fame war memorial, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Magnetic Hill and Sangam, where the green Indus meets the brown Zanskar. Sunset at Shanti Stupa.
Climb to Khardung La (about 5,360 m) and descend into Nubra (125 km, about five hours). Visit Diskit Monastery and its 32-metre Maitreya Buddha, then the dunes of Hunder, where double-humped Bactrian camels are a reminder of the Silk Route.
Follow the Shyok river to Pangong Tso (160 km, about six hours). The lake is 134 km long and changes colour through the afternoon. Night in a camp on the shore.
Watch the sunrise over the lake, then return to Leh over Chang La (170 km, about six hours). On the way visit Thiksey Monastery, built in tiers like the Potala in Lhasa, and Shey Palace.
A free day. Visit Leh Palace and the old town, drive to Hemis Monastery, or shop for apricots, pashmina and Tibetan handicrafts in the main bazaar.
Early breakfast and transfer to Leh airport.
