The three cities every first trip to North India should include: the capital, the Taj Mahal at sunrise and the forts of Jaipur, in six easy days.
Delhi, Agra and Jaipur sit about four to five hours apart by road and between them hold eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This trip covers the best of all three without early starts on every day.
You see the Taj Mahal twice if you wish: at sunset from Mehtab Bagh across the river, and inside at sunrise before the crowds. The trip ends in Delhi, or you can fly out of Jaipur.
Pick-up from Delhi airport or railway station and transfer to the hotel. In the evening drive past India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan, lit up after dark.
Start at Jama Masjid and ride a cycle-rickshaw through Chandni Chowk. Pay respects at Raj Ghat, then see Humayun's Tomb, the garden tomb that inspired the Taj, and the 73-metre Qutub Minar.
Drive to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway (about four hours, 230 km). Visit Agra Fort, where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking across at the Taj, and end the day at Mehtab Bagh for the sunset view.
Enter the Taj Mahal as the gates open. After breakfast drive to Jaipur (240 km, about six hours with stops), visiting Fatehpur Sikri and the Chand Baori stepwell at Abhaneri on the way.
Morning at Amber Fort. Stop at Jal Mahal, then visit the City Palace and Jantar Mantar and photograph Hawa Mahal. The evening is free for the bazaars: block prints, blue pottery and lac bangles.
Drive back to Delhi (about five hours, 280 km) and drop at the airport or railway station. Book a flight after 6 pm, or fly directly out of Jaipur.
