A week in the eastern Himalaya: the high-altitude Tsomgo Lake above Gangtok, sunrise on Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill and the tea gardens of Darjeeling.
Sikkim and Darjeeling share the same mountain, Kanchenjunga, the third highest in the world, and look at it from two sides. This trip gives three nights to each, which leaves time for a free afternoon in both towns.
You travel by private car from Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station. The permit for Tsomgo Lake is arranged by us; breakfast and dinner are included at both hotels.
Pick-up from Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station and a drive of about four and a half hours (125 km) along the Teesta river to Gangtok, at 1,650 m. Evening walk on the traffic-free MG Marg.
Drive up to Tsomgo Lake (40 km), a glacial lake at 3,750 m that stays frozen until April, and on to the shrine of Baba Harbhajan Singh. Nathula Pass on the China border can be added on the same day with a separate permit.
Visit Rumtek Monastery, the Do Drul Chorten stupa, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and Ban Jhakri Falls. Take the ropeway over the town and spend the evening at the Lal Bazaar market.
Drive about four hours (100 km) down to the Teesta and up through tea estates to Darjeeling, at 2,045 m. Evening at Chowrasta and the Mall.
Leave at 4 am for Tiger Hill to see the sun rise on Kanchenjunga; on a clear day Everest is visible too. Return via Ghoom Monastery and Batasia Loop. After breakfast visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, the zoo with its red pandas and snow leopards, the Tibetan Refugee Centre and a tea garden.
A day out to Mirik (50 km) through pine forest and tea estates along the Nepal border, with boating on Sumendu Lake. Or stay in town for the toy train joyride to Ghoom.
Drive down to Bagdogra airport or NJP station (70 km, about three hours).
